What to Expect During a Session at Recharge Bodywork

Massage and bodywork are intended to relax tension and stress for clients, but you might feel unsure or anxious about what will happen during your session. Here are a few commonly asked questions to relieve your anxiety, so you can have the best possible experience at Recharge Bodywork. Still have more questions, feel free to reach out to me. I am happy to help.

1) What type of massage or bodywork should I get? That depends on what your session goals are and what type of pain, tension, or injury you have. I suggest reviewing the Massage Services page which lists the modalities available. Many of these can be combined for a customized session tailored for you.

2) What should I expect during my appointment? Upon arrival at the studio, you will be asked to complete a brief health intake. Note the digital link is in your email confirmation, if you want to do this prior to arrival. After completing the intake, I will take you to the treatment room. I may ask you general medical questions about any pain you are experiencing or if you want to focus on specific areas of the body. It is important to be honest and transparent with any medical concerns and medications so that I can safely adapt your session to your specific needs. Please share any allergies or aversions to scents or oils so that I can avoid these during your session.

3) Do I have to get undressed? I suggest you undress to your comfort level. Many people choose to keep their underwear on, but others prefer to be naked. You can undress in private, and I will knock on the door to ensure that you are on the table and under the top sheet before entering. If you want specific work on the neck and upper back, I suggest removing your bra or top covering. You will be draped by a top sheet the whole time with no private areas of the body uncovered. See draping (#4) below for more information.

4) What is draping? Draping is how a massage therapist uses the top sheet to ensure that you are safe and secure during the session with no private areas exposed. I will only uncover the areas of the body that I am working on at that time. If there are areas that you prefer that I avoid, please let me know during our intake process.

5) What if I need to go to the bathroom during the session? I recommend going to the bathroom before your session. There is a bathroom conveniently located off the waiting room in the studio. However, if you need to use the bathroom during the session, do not hesitate to inform me and I will step out so you can get dressed to use the bathroom off the waiting room.

6) What if I am self-conscious about my body? This is a judgement-free zone. I am a professional massage therapist, and I am more focused on your muscles and your wellness goals. If there are areas that you want me to avoid making you more comfortable, just let me know.

7) What kind of music or sounds will be in the room? I try to minimize the sounds from outside the treatment room as much as possible. I use a white noise machine to assist with this, but the studio is in downtown Phoenixville and occasionally you may hear traffic noises. Luckily, the treatment room is in the back of the building, so it does not happen too often. I typically play Chill Hop of Lo fi music, but I can play anything you prefer for the session, just let me know.

8) What if I am ticklish? If you are ticklish in certain areas, we can avoid those areas so that you can remain comfortable during your session. Occasionally, people are ticklish in the same area where they are experiencing pain. This can be the body’s response to pain. We can use other techniques like compressions and stretching to work in these areas.

9) What kind of lotion or oil is used? I may use a cream, massage gel, or body butter depending on the modality and need. The products that I use are made from natural and organic ingredients. I am happy to share the details with you if you ask. If you have any sensitivities to oils, lotions, or scents, please let me know during our intake process.

10) Do I need to talk during my session? Most people prefer to close their eyes and relax during the session, while some prefer conversation. I will take the cue from you. I will check in occasionally about pressure or comfort level. If anything is ever uncomfortable, such as pressure, technique, table temperature or anything else, please feel free to speak up and let me know. I can always adjust.

11) What if I am feeling sick? Should I cancel? If you do not feel well, it is best to reschedule the session. It is not beneficial to the therapeutic process if you do not feel well, and it is best to not spread illnesses.

12) What if I have questions during the session? Curious about a technique or a specific muscle. I am a big anatomy geek, and I am happy to share this knowledge with you. The more you know about how your body works, the easier it is to achieve your wellness goals.

13) How often should I get a massage? It depends on your wellness goals. If you are looking for general self-care or body maintenance, once a month or once a quarter might suit your needs. If you are experiencing chronic pain or need injury recovery, you may want to try one a week or every two weeks. I try to make my pricing affordable so that individuals can get bodywork on a regular basis.

14) What if I am running late? If you are running late to your appointment, please call or text 610.915.8365 to let me know your estimated time of arrival.
